Sortation Equipment

High-speed sortation zones come with serious risks. Collisions, entrapment and unplanned stops can harm operators, damage equipment and bring material flow to a halt. Axelent’s modular systems protect people, keep flow predictable and support compliance.

Core equipment and their risks

A sortation system combines specialised equipment, each creating specific risks that need to be controlled.

Key components and risk areas:

Conveyors and sorting systems

Conveyors and sorting systems operating at high speed can cause collisions, entrapment and unsafe access if left unprotected. Axelent’s modular guarding and access controls minimise these risks without slowing operations.

Sorters

Shoe sorters, tilt-tray sorters, and pushers expose workers to moving parts. We enclose and guard these zones to prevent contact and ensure compliance.

Sensors & scanners

Sensors and scanners are essential for product identification but are often located close to moving equipment. Our solutions safeguard these zones while maintaining visibility and uninterrupted flow.

Robotic arms & pickers

Operate with high speed and force, requiring fencing, impact protection and clearly defined access points for safe maintenance.

Explore our solutions in practice and see how they protect people, machines and flow.

Keeping operators and systems safe

Safety is built into every layer of a well-functioning sortation system. Key risks in these environments include impact zones, crushing points, and hazardous motion near entry/exit areas of machinery.

Our solutions are designed to:

  • Prevent access to dangerous zones using fencing and interlocks
  • Enable safe maintenance through task-specific zones with zoned restart
  • Minimise downtime with clear visual alerts and modular configurations

With Axelent, safety becomes part of your process from day one. It protects people and performance without slowing operations.

Standards that guide our equipment design

Axelent safety systems are built to meet current European and US safety requirements, so compliance is part of your process from day one.

Machinery Directive (EU) and EN 619 set the framework for safe conveyors and sortation systems, ensuring that transfer points, picking stations and other high-risk areas are fully protected.

ISO 13857 and ISO 13854 define safety distances and clearance to prevent reach-through hazards and protect against crushing or shearing points, while ISO 14120 specifies how fixed and movable guards should be designed and installed.

In the US, ANSI B11.19 Annex E defines performance requirements for safeguarding, and OSHA 1910.212 covers occupational safety of machinery.

With these standards integrated into every stage, our systems make compliance straightforward and reliable.
